Today, I’m sharing a super simple, low-prep backyard nature scavenger hunt that turns a regular afternoon outside into a beautiful, hands-on object lesson about God’s creativity and care for us.
The best part? You don’t need to buy a single thing. Just step out your back door and watch your little ones discover the fingerprints of Jesus right in your own yard!
Gathering God’s Wonders: The Backyard Nature Scavenger Hunt Checklist
You can easily write these down on a piece of paper for your kids, draw little pictures next to them, or call them out one by one as a game. As your children find each item, it’s the perfect opportunity to sprinkle in a little reminder of how much Jesus loves them.
- Something Fuzzy (A soft leaf or patch of moss): “Look how soft that is! God made the plants so beautiful and unique, just like He made you.”
- Something Smooth (A river rock or sleek twig): “God is our constant, smooth-path guide. He makes our paths straight when we trust in Him.”
- A Shiny Leaf: “This leaf catches the light! Just like this, we are called to shine our light for Jesus so everyone can see His goodness.”
- Two Different Kinds of Seeds (Pinecones, acorns, or helicopter seeds): “Jesus talked about how tiny seeds grow into big, beautiful trees when they are planted in good soil. Just like a seed, your heart can grow big with His love!”
- Something Yellow (A dandelion or bright clover): “Yellow is the color of the sun! It reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World, chasing away all the darkness.”
- A Stick Shaped Like a Letter: “God knows your name and every detail about you, right down to the letters that spell it. You are His masterpiece!”
- Something that Smells Sweet (A flower or fresh grass): “The Bible says we are the sweet aroma of Christ to the world. Your kindness is a sweet smell to everyone around you!”
- Something Rough (Tree bark or a dry pinecone): “Just like this bark is strong and tough, God is our Rock and our protector. He is strong and will keep us safe.”
- A Feather: “The Bible says that God covers us with His feathers and under His wings we can trust Him. It reminds me of how a mother bird protects her babies.”
- Something Red (A berry or fallen leaf): “This red color reminds me of Jesus’s great love for us. His love is powerful and washes our hearts clean.”
- Two Matching Leaves (Or matching flowers): “Even though there are millions of leaves in the world, God made these two exactly alike! It shows how much detail He puts into everything He makes—including you.”
- Something Curved (A snail shell or curled leaf): “God holds the whole world in His hands. This curve reminds me that He is hugging us and keeping us close.”
- Moss or Lichen on a Rock: “See how the moss grows on the rock? It shows how God provides a home for even the smallest living things. He provides a home for you, too.”
3 Simple Ways to Connect the Hunt to Big Truths
While you are walking around collecting your treasures, here are three quick, conversational ways to gently weave faith into their playtime without it feeling like a formal lesson:
1. The Bird & Flower Reminder
If your little ones spot a robin hopping across the grass or a tiny wildflower popping up near the fence, take a quick pause. Remind them of what Jesus said about the birds and the flowers: If God takes such good care of the little birds and makes sure the flowers look so beautiful, imagine how much more He loves and cares for us! It’s a wonderful, comforting truth for little hearts to absorb.
2. Nature Jewelry: Sticky Crowns, Bracelets, & Necklaces
Once you’ve collected a few flat leaves, petals, and grass blades, you can make a quick “Creation Crown.” Cut a strip of cardboard or construction paper to fit your child’s head, put a piece of double-sided tape all the way around it, and let them stick their nature finds directly onto the tape.
You can also use the exact same double-sided tape trick to make gorgeous nature jewelry! Wrap a piece of tape around their wrist (sticky side facing out) to make a flower bracelet, or loop a piece of paper with tape around their neck for a nature necklace. Everyone will absolutely love pressing bright yellow dandelions, clover flowers, and tiny purple petals onto their creations to wear around the yard.
- The Faith Connection: As you help them put on their creations, tell them, “You are a beautiful child of the King! Jesus loves you so much, and your jewelry is decorated with the lovely things He created just for us to enjoy.”
3. A Quick Backyard Thank-You Prayer
Before you head back inside for snack time, hold those little hands right there in the grass and say a short, sweet prayer of gratitude. It shows our kids that we can talk to God anywhere, anytime:
“Dear Jesus, thank You for making this beautiful day. Thank You for the sunshine, the green grass, and all the cool flowers and treasures we found in the yard today. Most of all, thank You for loving our family so much. Amen.“
