Have you ever sat down to pray… and your mind just went completely blank?

You want to talk to God.

You have so much on your heart.

But the words just won’t come.

If that’s you, you are not alone — and you are not doing prayer wrong.

I’ve had so many moments where I sat down to pray and felt completely drained and scattered at the same time. It’s like my “mom-brain” has 50 tabs open, and I can’t find the one where the words are. I know God is right there with me… but trying to pull my heavy heart into actual sentences feels like a mountain I’m too tired to climb.

Maybe you’ve felt that, too.

Let me gently remind you of something:

God isn’t looking for a perfectly rehearsed speech. He’s just looking for you – your heart.

When Prayer Feels Hard

There was a recent season in my life that made this especially real for me.

Life felt loud. Busy. Constant.

With the girls needing me all day long, I rarely had a moment to just sit and be. I found myself becoming short-tempered and easily frustrated, and honestly… I didn’t fully understand why.

The guilt that followed was heavy.

After the girls went to sleep, I would sometimes sit alone in the quiet of my living room — almost stunned by the silence. I would praise God for that quiet moment, yet at the same time feel like a terrible mom for being so short and not as loving as I wanted to be.

So I sat there.

Guilt and all.

And I cried.

Maybe you’ve had nights like that too.

What Prayer Really Is

At its core, prayer is not saying it the “right” way or perfect sentences.

Prayer is powerful connection with your Creator.

It is surrendering everything you’re carrying — the guilt, the shame, the overwhelm, the things you cannot control — into His hands.

Scripture reminds us:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

Even when the emotions feel raw and overwhelming… His truth still stands.

God already knows how you feel.

He knows every thought.

Every worry.

Every tear you try to hold back.

And He welcomes you anyway.

When You Don’t Have Words

One thing that has helped me immensely is starting with worship music.

Sometimes I don’t immediately feel God’s presence — and that’s okay. Feelings can come and go. But playing worship music helps quiet the noise in my mind and softens my heart before I begin to pray.

If you’re struggling to start, try this simple rhythm:

Step 1: Create a quiet space

This doesn’t have to be a picture-perfect morning routine.

It might be:

  • Sitting in your parked car for five minutes
  • Standing at the kitchen sink before you’re needed, again
  • Folding laundry in the middle of of the chaos
  • Turning off notifications and stepping into another room

The goal isn’t silence without noise — it’s creating even the smallest intentional pause.

You’re simply making space to be aware that God is already with you.

Even two quiet minutes matter.

Step 2: Play worship music

When your mind feels scattered, music can gently refocus your heart.

Let the lyrics speak truth over you before you try to form your own sentences.

Sometimes I don’t sing along right away. I just listen.

I let the words remind me:

  • Who God is
  • What He promises
  • That I am not alone

You don’t have to feel something dramatic. You’re simply positioning your heart toward Him.

Step 3: Sit with God for a moment

Before you rush into talking, just sit.

Breathe slowly.

Let your body settle.

You might even say in your mind,
“Lord, I’m here.”

There’s something powerful about choosing stillness in a world that constantly demands your attention.

Prayer is not a performance.
It is presence.

Step 4: Speak honestly

When you’re ready, start small.

You don’t need spiritual language.

You don’t need impressive words.

You can say:

  • “I’m tired.”
  • “I feel guilty.”
  • “I don’t understand why I’m reacting this way.”
  • “Help me.”
  • “I’m angry.”

That counts.

Honesty opens the door for closeness.

God isn’t intimidated by your emotions. He isn’t disappointed by your weakness.

He already knows — and He invites you to bring it to Him anyway.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

Step 5: Praise and Thank God

Before you finish praying, try taking a moment to praise God for who He is and thank Him for something in your life.

If you’re struggling to find the words, start very simply.

Praise focuses on who God is. You might say things like:

“God, You are good.”
“You are patient with me.”
“You are faithful even when I struggle.”

Then move into gratitude.

Thanking God focuses on what He has done or what He has given.

Some days it may feel easy to name things you’re thankful for. Other days, especially when life feels heavy, it might feel much harder.

On those days, start small.

You could thank Him for:

the breath in your lungs
the roof over your head
a child’s laugh in the other room
getting through a difficult day
the strength to keep going

Sometimes the most honest prayer is simply:

“God, I’m struggling to feel thankful right now… but I trust that You are still good.”

And that counts.

Praise and gratitude slowly shift our perspective. They remind our hearts that even when life feels uncertain, God’s character never changes.

You don’t have to find perfect words.

Just start where you are.

When You Still Feel Stuck

Here is the freedom many of us need to hear:

Your prayers do not have to be long.

They do not have to be perfect.

They do not have to sound “spiritual enough.”

Sometimes prayer is:

  • a whisper
  • a sigh
  • tears falling in silence
  • one honest sentence

Scripture gives us so much comfort here:

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” — Psalm 145:18

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” — Romans 8:26

Even when words fail…

You are still being heard.

A Simple Prayer

If you need somewhere to start, you can borrow this:

Lord,
I don’t even have the right words right now.
But You see my heart.
You know what I’m carrying.
I give you my guilt, my stress, my overwhelm.
Draw me close to You and quiet my mind.
In Jesus name, Amen.

Make it yours. Change it. Whisper it.

The Truth to Remember

Prayer is a powerful connection with our Heavenly Father — and He longs for that connection with you.

Not the version of you that pretends everything is fine.

Not the put-together version.

The real you.

And something beautiful happens the more you come to Him.

The more you pray…

the more you want more of Him.

That restless feeling in your heart — the one that nothing in this world could fill?

Friend, that is a God-sized space.

And only He can fill it.

Final Encouragement

If prayer feels awkward right now… keep coming anyway.

If the words feel clumsy… keep speaking anyway.

If all you have is silence and tears… come anyway.

He is near.

He is listening.

And He stays.
